Another great morning report presentation at the VA. We discussed heart failure and Pargol researched the following question:
Q: What are the roles of BNP in patients with heart failure ?
A: Testing for either BNP or NT-proBNP has a number of possible uses in heart failure practice:
- Screening for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction.
- Risk stratification and prognostication.
- Treatment monitoring.
In patients with acute heart failure, BNP has been shown to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality > 1500 @ d/c predicts 28% mortality at 6 months.
Amazingly, measuring plasma BNP concentrations before discharge may help to identify patients with heart failure who are at a low risk of re-admission within the next month.
