Code status discussions in terminally ill is a challenging emotional experience for most physicians. The inner conflict between our drive to ‘cure’ vs the need to provide ‘reasonable’ patient care leads us to asking ambiguous questions like the above to family members. The answer inevitably is ‘Of course’ when in fact what they want is ‘Do everything that is reasonable’. Lets take a vow to remove this question from our code status discussions. If you are not comfortable describing what a code is, maybe we can use video support tools. Check the sample video at ACP decisions.
