Research and Scholarly Activity
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is committed to fostering a robust culture of research and scholarly activity. Residents are encouraged to engage in innovative research projects, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based
medicine to advance clinical care and medical knowledge. Residents in our program have access to experienced faculty mentors and resources, with opportunities to engage in research across various fields, including cardiology, gastroenterology,
hematology, oncology, infectious disease, rheumatology, nephrology, endocrinology, behavioral medicine, and health equity.
Our program provides dedicated annual didactics on research and quality improvement, led by chief medical residents, to guide residents and interns through every step of the research process. These sessions cover topics such as starting
a research project, formulating research questions, conducting literature searches, data collection, collaborating with statisticians, and academic writing. We also offer a mandatory lecture on the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
process, delivered by the Associate Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine. This session provides a comprehensive overview of the IRB process, from project inception to approval. Residents are strongly encouraged to submit
their research to local and national conferences and to actively participate in presenting their work at these events.
The faculty at Wayne State University provide dedicated mentorship to residents, guiding them through research projects and fostering their scholarly growth. Residents collaborate closely with faculty members to pursue innovative and impactful research. The Wayne State University School of Medicine, recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for its excellence in research and community engagement, is a leader in medical innovation. Notable achievements include:
- Developing AZT, the first FDA-approved drug to treat AIDS.
- Performing the first use of a mechanical heart pump in open-heart surgery.
- Pioneering optogenetic strategies to restore vision.
- Creating a cost-effective screening method to identify expectant mothers at risk of preterm birth and reducing preterm birth risk by 40%.
Renowned for its groundbreaking biomedical research, the Wayne State University School of Medicine ranks among Michigan’s top medical research institutions. Faculty, residents and students work in interdisciplinary teams across various settings to develop advanced techniques, technologies, and processes that improve patient care. In the 2023 fiscal year, the School of Medicine received over $183 million in research funding, highlighting its ongoing commitment to scientific discovery and innovation.
