In our current practice, we come across many homeless patients. It is important to determine our patient’s housing situation as it can have implications on their healthcare. I remember coming across a patient who had uncontrolled diabetes. He was admitted for DKA. When asked about his adherence to insulin, he said that he wants to be adherent however he is not able to due to the fact that he is homeless. He sleeps in his car and does not own a fridge and so can’t store his insulin. Treating this patient’s DM is limited by his social condition and the only way to fix his blood glucose is by providing him with the basic necessities. It is also important to recognize what we are able to do to help. This week I learned the different types of resources that I could provide to the patient including the “211”.
