Module 8; Homeless

This week topic actually opened my eyes and made me realize some facts that I kinda new but wasn’t very receptive of.
How 1 million people are homeless is something that is very sad.
I have seen a patient in my clinic who was dependent on her father for housing. Her father was a Veteran from the Korean war. When her father passed away she was not able to make the mortgage payments on time and is facing the possibility of being homeless.
I used to engage with her in the topic during previous visits, and she educated me about a few things and how a SW is helping her to apply for SS.
In our clinic I am yet to find a way to help her, we don’t have a dedicated SW. All the help I was able to offer my 8 yr Hodgkins lymphoma survivor is fill paper work in a timely manner.
In the inpatient setting it is easier as out wonderful social workers are able to provide some help.
NSO is one of the bigger shelter providers in the Detroit area, and Dr. Dakroub pointed out kindly that we can go and volunteer, something i will be doing this year.
There are a few things that I would like to point out, I have seen several patients post hospital discharge over r the past 2.5 yrs, who are homeless and had no insurance, and more than often i never saw them back in clinic. I am still trying to find what support or resources we have in GMAP for those patient and this population.
